What Is Children's Airway Treatment?

Children can develop airway and breathing issues because of an underdeveloped airway or orthodontic issues causing obstructions to healthy breathing.

Often, airway problems go undiagnosed in children and effective solutions for their symptoms are never found. Through early, non-invasive growth guidance or functional orthodontic treatment, children's airway treatment expert, Dr. Greg Pyle, can effectively correct any airway problems in his Muncie dental office.

Early airway treatment in children can help prevent many health issues, including:

  • Daytime drowsiness
  • Aggressive behavior
  • ADD/ADHD
  • Swollen adenoids and tonsils
  • Frequent headaches
  • Chronic allergies
  • Chronically chapped lips

Noninvasive, Natural Solutions for Breathing and Children's Airway Treatment

Myobrace® Orthodontics

Most orthodontic problems are the result of incorrect jaw development. Functional orthodontics is a non-invasive therapy that uses fixed and removable orthodontic appliances (not braces) to correct the underlying causes of crooked teeth, allowing for natural growth and development.

Treatment is for children aged between 3 to 15 and involves using a series of removable intra-oral appliances that are worn for 1-2 hours each day plus overnight while sleeping.

Here are some of the ways treatment with Myobrace® can positively affect your child:

  • Corrects poor oral habits
  • Develops and aligns the jaw
  • Straightens the teeth
  • Optimizes facial development
  • Improves overall health

Myofunctional Therapy

By resolving breathing and airway issues with myofunctional exercises, children are placed on a positive pathway for growing, developing, and breathing in a more natural manner.

Myofunctional therapy is a form of physical therapy that targets the muscles used for chewing, swallowing, and speaking. Exercises that target these muscles are used to strengthen them and create an open airway for correct breathing.

What are some of the benefits of myofunctional therapy?

  • Non-invasive
  • Inexpensive
  • No risky side effects
  • More healthy energy
  • Improves overall health

Have Questions About Children's Airway Treatment?

Get the answers below.

No, they're actually very simple. They involve movements of the tongue and mouth that any child can perform.

There is a lot of "homework" involved with the myofunctional exercises. They must be performed daily. However, once you have the routine down, they will only take a few minutes to do.

Since treatment is tied in with your child's growing and changing physical development, treatment is not fast. Slow and steady changes are needed.

12 to 15 appointments will be needed throughout the year, but we promise to make each visit fun and engaging!

If your child is experiencing any of the symptoms mentioned earlier on this page, it would be a good idea to have them checked.

An airway exam is now part of every dental examination at University Avenue Dental, including your children's appointments. We've found that the earlier the diagnoses in children, the more conservative and effective the treatment can be.

Yes, we do! Many adults are affected by airway and breathing problems that have resulted in sleep apnea and disruptive sleep disorder.

Dr. Pyle offers effective, non-invasive therapy for adults.
